The quietest air purifier isn't the smallest — it's the biggest

Data study · air-purifiers

We divided each purifier's AHAM-verified smoke CADR by its quietest fan speed to find which ones deliver the most clean air per decibel — the number that actually matters in a bedroom. The counterintuitive result: the biggest units run the quietest for the air they move. For pure value, see our companion ranking, [air purifiers by CADR per dollar](/lp/air-purifier-cadr-per-dollar).

Clean air per decibel (CFM per dBA)

Higher = better
The quietest-running purifier here is also the biggest: the Blueair 211i Max moves 410 CFM of smoke CADR at a 23 dB floor — 17.8 CFM of clean air for every decibel, roughly triple the budget Levoit 300S. A large fan loafing on low is quieter than a small fan straining.
Size beats sticker price for quiet performance. The two $300 large units (Blueair 211i Max, Levoit 600S) top the list; the $130 Core 300S lands last at 5.9 CFM/dBA — a small fan has to spin harder, and louder, to clear even a small room.
The value champ isn't the quiet champ. The Coway AP-1512HH — our best CADR-per-dollar pick — sits mid-pack here at 9.5 CFM/dBA. It's efficient with your money, but its smaller fan gives up quiet-running headroom, and for a bedroom the bigger units pull ahead.
Between the two leaders, the Blueair edges the Levoit 600S on the noise floor (23 vs 26 dB) for the identical 410 CADR — the one to pick if you sleep light.
Best-to-worst spread is 3x. For a room you sleep in, sizing the fan to the space matters far more than chasing the lowest price.

Methodology

Clean air per decibel = AHAM-verified smoke CADR ÷ the purifier's quietest fan-speed sound level; higher is better. Every row pairs an AHAM-sourced CADR with a like-for-like low/sleep-speed noise figure, so the comparison stays apples-to-apples — units we only have inconsistent noise data for are held out rather than blended in. This is the noise companion to our CADR-per-dollar value ranking.

  • Clean air per decibel
  • AHAM smoke CADR (CFM)
  • Quietest-speed noise (dBA)
