If mobile gaming is the point, nothing here competes: 185Hz, pressure-sensitive shoulder triggers, a 5,800 mAh dual battery, and a clip-on fan. The catches: a last-gen chip, a 227g body, a 1080p screen, and only two OS updates. Buy it to game, not to do everything else.

The ROG Phone 9 Pro isn't trying to be your everything-phone — it's a handheld console with a SIM slot. The 6.78-inch AMOLED runs at 185Hz, there are two pressure-sensitive AirTrigger zones along the frame that act as shoulder buttons, and the GameCool 9 system — vapor chamber plus the bundled AeroActive Cooler X Pro on the Pro Edition — keeps the Snapdragon 8 Elite from throttling through long sessions. HotHardware measured it as the fastest Android phone, and the gaming-specific touches genuinely change how marathon sessions feel. It backs that up with endurance most slabs can't match: a 5,800 mAh dual-cell battery with 65W charging, plus a headphone jack and stereo speakers that gaming phones keep and everyone else drops. The 50MP gimbal-stabilized main camera, 3x telephoto, and ultrawide are better than gaming phones usually bother with — perfectly good, if not flagship-class. Now the honest part. It launched on the Snapdragon 8 Elite, a generation behind the newest chips, so a OnePlus 15 wins raw benchmarks. At 227g it's heavy, the screen is only 1080p, the buttons feel a little loose for the price, and Asus promises just two OS updates and five years of security — easily the weakest support here. If you don't game seriously, you're paying for hardware you won't use.

How we know

High confidenceLast checked

We score the ROG Phone 9 Pro the gaming specialist on near-unanimous reviewer agreement that it's the best mobile gaming phone — HotHardware called it the fastest Android phone and rated it 90%, with NotebookCheck's review collection echoing 'best gaming phone to date.' Performance and battery score high for sustained gaming and the 5,800 mAh dual cell; we mark software support lowest in the roster (two OS updates) and value down for the niche premium. Note it runs the previous-gen Snapdragon 8 Elite, so newer phones win raw benchmarks. Based on manufacturer specs and reviews from HotHardware and NotebookCheck; not tested in-house.
