Unbeatable for action, helmet, and underwater shots, but its fixed focus and Bluetooth-only audio make it a poor primary camera for sit-down talking-head vlogs.
The HERO13 Black is the action camera most vloggers reach for when the shot involves motion, water, or a mount. HyperSmooth 6.0 and Horizon Lock keep footage glassy through running, biking, and chaos, it's waterproof to 10m without a case, and the new HB-series lens mods snap on for macro, ultra-wide, or anamorphic looks. Where it struggles is the very thing other vlogging cameras are built for: fixed-focus optics that prioritize the background over your face, and no 3.5mm input — audio means Bluetooth mics or the Media Mod.

What we like
- ✓Best-in-class HyperSmooth stabilization and Horizon Lock
- ✓Waterproof to 10m with no housing
- ✓Mounts to helmets, bikes, chests, almost anywhere
- ✓Snap-on lens mods for macro, ultra-wide, and anamorphic
- ✓Front screen plus 5.3K/4K120 slow-mo
Trade-offs
- −Fixed focus prioritizes the background — weak for talking-head
- −No 3.5mm mic input; audio needs Bluetooth or the Media Mod
- −Small sensor limits low-light quality
- −Tiny touchscreen and menus take practice
Best for
action, POV, and underwater creators who need a rugged, mountable camera with the best stabilization
Avoid if
your main shot is sitting and talking to the camera, where you'll want autofocus and a mic input

How we know
High confidenceLast checkedReviewers consider the HERO13 the action-camera benchmark while cautioning against it as a primary vlogging cam. Tom's Guide rates the stabilization and the new lens mods highly and notes the sensor carries over from the HERO12, so low-light gains are modest. CyclingWeekly praises the video quality, boosted HDR, and the additional lenses for sport and POV use. Across reviews the recurring vlogging caveat is the same: fixed focus and the lack of a standard mic input make it excellent for action B-roll but awkward for sit-down, face-to-camera talking.
