A home-theater receiver setup without the receiver. Bar, wireless sub, and two rears make a true 11.1.4 Atmos system with height front and back, so effects travel behind you. It's pricey and it's four boxes to power, but for movie nights nothing here is more cinematic.

If you want the closest thing to a home-theater receiver setup without the receiver, the HW-Q990F is it: a flagship bar, a wireless subwoofer, and two wireless rear speakers combine into an 11.1.4 channel layout with Atmos height front and back. The result is the most enveloping, room-filling movie sound in our lineup — discrete effects actually travel behind you. It pairs especially well with Samsung TVs (Q-Symphony plays the TV speakers in concert with the bar). The trade-offs are honest: it's the most expensive option, it's a lot of boxes to place and power, and it's genuine overkill for small rooms or dialogue-first viewers.

Best for

Avoid if

You live in an apartment or mostly watch news and talk shows — this much system is wasted, and a single dialogue-focused bar makes more sense.

The Samsung HW-Q990F is the flagship surround pick and, by most reviewers' reckoning, the Dolby Atmos soundbar system to beat. Unlike a single bar, it's a complete 11.1.4 package out of the box — soundbar, wireless subwoofer, and two rear surround speakers, with 23 drivers in total and up-firing channels on both the bar and the rears for genuine overhead height effects. That hardware translates into a large, powerful, properly enveloping movie experience that simpler bars can't match, and it holds together even when a mix gets dense and chaotic. It supports both Dolby Atmos and DTS:X, adds SpaceFit Sound Pro room tuning, and connects via HDMI eARC plus two HDMI 2.1 inputs that pass 4K120 through to your TV. The redesigned cube subwoofer is much more compact than the old tower while keeping the power. The honest caveats: it's expensive; it's only a minor update over the previous Q990D; the front LED display is hard to read; several of its best tricks (Q-Symphony, wireless Atmos, Eclipsa Audio) only unlock with a recent Samsung TV; and a four-piece system means four power outlets and more setup than a single bar. For a large room and serious movie nights, it's the most cinematic option here.
