Sony Bravia 9 vs TCL QM8K: Premium vs Value Mini-LED

The Sony Bravia 9 is the premium mini-LED for processing, motion, and bright rooms. The TCL QM8K delivers most of the brightness for far less — here's the trade-off.

Sony Bravia 9 vs TCL QM8K: Premium vs Value Mini-LED

Quick verdict

Choose the Sony Bravia 9 (PickGrade 8.8) if you want the most refined mini-LED — class-leading motion, processing, and local dimming for sports and cinematic content in a bright room. Choose the TCL QM8K (PickGrade 8.6) if you want most of that brightness and big-screen impact for far less money.

The short version: the Bravia 9 is the premium pick; the QM8K is the value pick. Take the TVs quiz if you're also considering OLED.

Brightness and black levels

Both are seriously bright mini-LEDs that fight glare well. The Bravia 9 leads on control — its backlight algorithm delivers near-OLED blacks with minimal blooming, and Sony's processing is the best in the class for motion and upscaling. The QM8K is comparably bright (2,000+ nits) and its Halo Control System keeps blacks impressively clean for the price, though Sony's dimming is a step more refined.

Motion and sports

This is the Bravia 9's signature strength. Sony's motion handling and anti-reflective screen make it the standout for live sports and fast action. The QM8K is no slouch and looks great with sports too, but the Bravia 9 is the more polished performer.

Gaming

Neither is a high-refresh monster: the Sony caps at 120Hz and the TCL at 144Hz, and both offer only two HDMI 2.1 ports. That's fine for a single console but tight if you'll connect a console, a PC, and a soundbar. The QM8K's 144Hz/288Hz modes give it a slight edge for PC players. See best TVs for gaming.

Price and value

This is the whole story. The Bravia 9 is a flagship that costs roughly twice as much as the QM8K. The TCL gives you the bulk of the brightness and big-screen experience — including 85- and 98-inch sizes — for far less. If you want the most screen and brightness per dollar, the QM8K is hard to beat.

Bottom line

Buy the Sony Bravia 9 for premium processing, motion, and the most refined mini-LED picture. Buy the TCL QM8K for big, bright value. If you have a dark room, an OLED like the LG C5 may suit you better — compare in our OLED vs mini-LED guide, or take the quiz.
