Real noise canceling for around $100, and not much compromise
Sony WH-CH720N

The budget ANC pick that doesn't feel like a downgrade. For around $100 you get light over-ears, useful noise canceling, and a 35-hour battery. Switch off the boomy default EQ and it balances out. It won't silence a jet, but the value is hard to beat.
Proof you don't need $400 for legitimate noise canceling. The CH720N is light enough to forget you're wearing it, cancels enough everyday noise to make a commute or a study session quieter, and runs an enormous 35 hours per charge. It ships with an overcooked bass tuning, so flip off the Excited EQ in Sony's app and it evens right out. The plastic build feels its price and the ANC won't match the XM6, but for around $100 it's the obvious value pick.

What we like
- ✓Great value for ANC
- ✓Lightweight over-ear design
- ✓Good for work and studying
Trade-offs
- −Ships with a heavy 'Excited' bass EQ by default - needs tweaking in the Sony app for balance
- −Plastic build feels a little cheap
- −No carrying case and the cups don't fold flat
- −ANC lets some low-frequency noise through, and the sound can feel a bit constrained next to pricier cans
Best for
Budget shoppers who want solid noise cancellation and light comfort without paying flagship prices.
Avoid if
You want best-in-class noise cancellation, premium materials, or the longest possible battery life.

How we know
High confidenceLast checkedThe Sony WH-CH720N is the value champion of over-ear noise cancellers — a What Hi-Fi Awards winner that delivers a genuine chunk of Sony's premium experience for around $100. At roughly 192g it's noticeably lighter than most flagships, so it stays comfortable through long study sessions, work calls, and commutes, with about 35 hours of battery, USB-C charging, multipoint pairing, and DSEE audio upscaling via the Sony Headphones app. The ANC is real and effective for the price: it won't silence a plane like the WH-1000XM series, but it meaningfully cuts everyday background noise. Sound is punchy and energetic, though reviewers at What Hi-Fi and TechRadar note it ships with a heavy, over-excited bass tuning — easily tamed by switching off the Excited EQ preset in the app, after which it balances nicely. The compromises are the expected budget ones: the build is plastic and feels a little cheap, there's no carrying case and the cups don't fold flat, the ANC lets some low-frequency noise through, and the sound can feel a touch constrained next to pricier cans. For students, commuters, and anyone who wants legitimate ANC on a tight budget, it's the easy pick.
