The lab-test champion of portables — built for the rooms that punish them.
Whynter NEX Inverter Dual Hose Portable AC (14,000 BTU / 12,000 SACC, ARC-1230WN)
Whynter
Rtings' and TechGearLab's top-tested portable pulls a hot room down nearly 12°F in an hour and installs faster than any rival thanks to its stowaway hose. Choose it over the Duo for raw cooling in brutal rooms; choose the Duo for efficiency and a quieter idle.
If the Duo is the efficiency story, the ARC-1230WN is the brute-force one. TechGearLab measured an 11.9°F drop in 60 minutes — the biggest of any portable it tested, an Editors' Choice result — and Rtings currently ranks it the best portable AC it has tested. For west-facing rooms, top-floor bakes, and garages that defeat lesser portables, this is the unit that keeps up. Whynter's hose-in-hose NEX design gives it the same true dual-hose physics as the Duo, and it beats the Duo on livability details: the hose comes pre-installed and stows away on the unit for storage, the window kit seats in five to ten minutes (best install in TechGearLab's lineup), and an 80° auto-swing louver spreads air a fixed vent can't. Wi-Fi with Alexa and Google runs through the NetHome Plus app. Where it gives ground: it's mid-pack on energy efficiency — the inverter helps, but the Duo is measurably cheaper to run — and at 73–77 pounds with rear-mounted attachments it's awkward on stairs. At around $556, it's the pick when your problem is heat, not your power bill.

What we like
- ✓Biggest measured temperature drop of any portable in TechGearLab's lab — and Rtings' current top portable
- ✓Fastest, cleanest install of the class: pre-installed stowaway hose, 5–10 minute window kit
- ✓Auto-swing louver actually distributes air instead of firing one cold beam
- ✓True dual-hose efficiency without two hoses cluttering the window
Trade-offs
- −Measurably less efficient than the Midea Duo over a season of runtime
- −73–77 lb with back-heavy balance — miserable on stairs and long carpet
- −58 dBA on high is workmanlike, not bedroom-quiet, while it's pulling a room down
- −Dim display and a merely serviceable app
Best for
you're fighting a genuinely hot space — west-facing, top-floor, or up to 600 sq ft — where weaker portables stall
Avoid if
seasonal running cost matters more than peak cooling, or the unit has to travel stairs regularly

How we know
High confidenceTechGearLab's instrumented lab test recorded an 11.9°F one-hour drop — the largest in its portable lineup — alongside top installation and quietness-for-power scores (58.4 dBA on high), earning its Editors' Choice; Rtings rates the NEX ARC-1230WN its best portable AC tested for large rooms up to 600 sq ft; Forbes kept it as the top double-hose pick in its 2026 field test. Expert-consensus pricing verified at $555.75 (June 2026). Scored as the cooling-power champion of portables: ahead of the Duo on raw pulldown and install, behind it on efficiency and idle noise.
