At $140 — often $80 on sale — it's a fine way to stream, read, and browse, and tougher than its plastic build looks. But Fire OS means no Google Play out of the box (you can sideload it), a slow chip, and a so-so screen. A great second or guest tablet, not a primary one.

The Fire HD 10 is the tablet you buy when you want to spend as little as possible and still stream Netflix, read Kindle books, and browse the web. At $140 list — and routinely $70 to $80 on Prime Day or Black Friday — it's almost impulse-buy cheap, and the 10.1-inch 1080p screen plus 13-hour battery are genuinely fine for couch viewing. Amazon also makes it tougher than its plastic build suggests, with strengthened glass rated 2.7x more drop-resistant than a Galaxy Tab A8. The compromise is software. Fire OS runs on top of Android but ships without the Google Play Store, so YouTube, Gmail, Maps, and many games aren't in Amazon's Appstore. You can sideload the Play Store in about ten minutes if you're comfortable following a guide, and reviewers recommend it — but out of the box you live in Amazon's walled garden, with Alexa and Echo Show mode as the upside. Performance is the other limit: the MediaTek chip and 3GB of RAM are slow next to any real mid-range Android tablet, and there's no stylus or keyboard worth relying on. None of that matters if you just want a cheap screen for media and reading. It does if you expect it to be your main, do-everything tablet."
