Best mesh Wi-Fi for smart homes
Routers that double as your smart-home hub
The newest mesh systems hide a useful trick: each node can act as a Matter controller and Thread border router, and some add a Zigbee radio — so the kit that fills your home with Wi-Fi can also be the bridge your smart bulbs, locks, and sensors talk through, retiring a separate hub. Three systems do this best.
- Amazon Eero Max 7 · 8.2/10 — The premium pick. Every node is a Matter, Thread, and Zigbee hub, the eero app is the easiest in networking, and a true dual-10-gig wired backbone keeps a busy smart home responsive. Just budget for eero Plus if you want the advanced security, and know there's no web interface for tinkerers.
- Amazon Eero 7 · 8.0/10 — The same Matter, Thread, and Zigbee hub and the same effortless app as the Max 7, at an entry-level price. It's dual-band Wi-Fi 7 (no 6 GHz), so you trade peak speed for the cheapest way onto eero's ecosystem.
- Google Nest Wifi Pro · 7.3/10 — The choice if you live in Google Home. It's a Matter and Thread border router with the tightest Google Assistant integration, and it's well-priced — but it's Wi-Fi 6E with Gigabit-only ports, so it's the slowest kit here.
What to check before you buy
A smart-home mesh is only as useful as the protocols it speaks. Confirm the system is a Thread border router (most Matter-over-Thread gear needs one), check whether it includes a Zigbee radio if you own older Zigbee devices, and remember that eero and Nest both route setup and control through a cloud account — convenient, but worth knowing if privacy matters to you.

Frequently asked
Can a mesh router replace my smart-home hub?
Increasingly, yes. eero (Max 7 and 7) and Google Nest Wifi Pro nodes act as Matter controllers and Thread border routers, and eero adds Zigbee — so they can bridge many smart bulbs, locks, and sensors without a separate hub. Just confirm your specific devices use Matter, Thread, or Zigbee.
Which is better for smart homes, eero or Nest Wifi Pro?
eero (Max 7 or 7) is the stronger all-rounder: it adds a Zigbee radio and faster Wi-Fi 7 hardware. Choose Nest Wifi Pro if you're committed to Google Home and Google Assistant, and can accept its slower Wi-Fi 6E and Gigabit-only ports.
