Our highest-grading purifier. 253 smoke CADR covers rooms to ~392 sq ft, True HEPA does the particle work, and the pelleted carbon bed handles cooking odors that thin-carbon rivals can't touch. All for ~$180. Switch PlasmaWave off and leave it off.

The value champion that's a pet owner's secret weapon. The 5510 puts a washable mesh pre-filter in front of its True HEPA, so it traps hair and big dust before they clog the expensive filter, a real edge in a shedding house, and backs it with carbon for odors and a smart app with auto mode. It topped Project Farm's independent test. It runs loud at full speed (~67 dBA) and the app is basic, but at around $180 with ~370 sq ft of coverage, nothing matches its price-to-performance for pet homes.

What we like

  • Our highest-grading air purifier: strong CADR, True HEPA, and real carbon depth for ~$180
  • Pelleted AOC carbon genuinely handles cooking odors and smoke, not just light household smells
  • 253 smoke CADR covers rooms up to ~392 sq ft with headroom to run quietly
  • Washable pre-filter keeps running costs down; replacement sets ~$50/yr
  • Very quiet in sleep mode (~27.8 dB), with 5 fan speeds, auto mode, and Wi-Fi app control
  • 2-year warranty

Trade-offs

  • PlasmaWave is a bipolar ionizer; it can be switched off, and we'd recommend you do
  • Gets genuinely loud at its top speed (~60 dB), though sleep mode is very quiet
  • Replacement filters run about $50 a year for genuine Winix sets
  • Tall and fairly bulky at 22 inches, so it needs real floor space

Best for

Pet households and shedding-pet owners who want a washable pre-filter that catches hair before the HEPA, plus strong dust, dander, and odor control in rooms up to ~370 sq ft — at a mid-range price with a smart app and auto mode.

Avoid if

Very large or open spaces over ~400 sq ft, anyone who needs whisper-quiet cleaning (it runs loud and slows at sub-45 dBA speeds), or buyers who want a feature-rich companion app.

How we know

High confidenceLast checked

The Winix 5510 is the strongest all-round performer in our air-purifier catalog. Its published CADR is 252 dust / 253 smoke / 247 pollen cfm, rated for rooms up to about 392 sq ft, which is real headroom for a purifier at this price. Filtration is a genuine 4-stage system: a washable mesh pre-filter, a pelleted AOC activated-carbon filter, a True HEPA filter, and PlasmaWave. The pelleted carbon is what separates it from the field. Most purifiers near this price carry a thin carbon sheet that handles light household smells and nothing more; the 5510's pelleted bed genuinely helps with cooking odors and smoke, which is why it takes odor handling on our scorecard by a clear margin. Noise runs from about 27.8 dB in sleep mode up to roughly 60 dB at maximum across its five fan speeds, so it's quiet where it matters and loud when pushed, which is normal for a purifier with this much airflow. The washable pre-filter keeps running costs down, replacement filter sets run about $50 a year, and it carries a 2-year warranty. One caveat we take seriously: PlasmaWave is a bipolar ionizer. Ionizers can generate trace ozone, which is a lung irritant rather than a genuine cleaner. It can be switched off, and we'd leave it off. With PlasmaWave disabled, the 5510 is still an excellent purifier, because the HEPA and carbon stages are doing the real work.

  • ★★★★★Great for the living room.

Wouldn’t use it on my bedroom. But works great in my living room. A bit noisy but works well. Especially if you’re living in the city.
