One flexible assistant for the whole team, not a narrow tool
ChatGPT Business

The most flexible single AI subscription: GPT-5.5 plus Deep Research, Custom GPTs, Canvas, and the Codex coding agent in one team workspace with strong admin controls. The two-seat minimum and per-seat feature limits aside, it does the most for the money.
The safest first AI subscription for a team that wants one tool, not ten. ChatGPT Business is OpenAI's shared workspace, and the appeal is breadth: the same assistant drafts marketing copy, reasons through a spreadsheet, runs Deep Research, builds Custom GPTs, and writes code via Codex, so it helps across every department instead of solving one narrow job. Teams get an admin console with SSO, SCIM, and MFA, SOC 2 and ISO compliance, and a guarantee your workspace data won't train models. The catches: a two-seat minimum (solo users want Plus or Pro), per-seat limits on heavy features, and it's a standalone workspace rather than AI baked into Office or Google apps. If you want one capable assistant most of your team will actually use, start here.

What we like
- ✓Most flexible single AI subscription — one tool across writing, research, analysis, planning, and coding
- ✓Full feature set: GPT-5.5, Deep Research, Custom GPTs, Canvas, image generation, and the Codex coding agent
- ✓Knowledge connectors pull in Google Drive, SharePoint, and GitHub context
- ✓Team admin console with SAML SSO, SCIM, MFA, and SOC 2 Type 2 / ISO 27001 compliance
- ✓Workspace data is not used to train models by default
- ✓Affordable entry to team AI at $20-$25 per seat
Trade-offs
- −Minimum 2 seats, so true solo users are better served by ChatGPT Plus or Pro
- −Advanced features (Deep Research, image generation, Codex, voice) have per-seat limits; heavy use requires buying workspace credits
- −API access is billed separately and is not included in the subscription
- −It is a standalone workspace, not embedded in Office or Google Workspace apps — for in-app AI, Copilot or Gemini fit better
- −Data residency, BAAs, and zero-data-retention require the contracted Enterprise plan, not self-serve Business
Best for
Small businesses, solo operators, students, creators, and teams that want one flexible AI assistant for writing, research, planning, analysis, brainstorming, and everyday productivity.
Avoid if
your main need is AI embedded directly inside Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace, or you only need a narrow specialist tool for design, grammar, or source-backed research.

How we know
High confidenceLast checkedResearched and verified June 2026 against OpenAI's documentation and current plan comparisons. ChatGPT Business is OpenAI's self-serve shared workspace for teams (renamed from ChatGPT Team), priced at $25 per seat monthly or $20 annually with a two-seat minimum. Standard seats include the full ChatGPT feature set — GPT-5.5 and GPT-5.5 Pro, reasoning models, Custom GPTs, Projects, Canvas, Deep Research, the ChatGPT Agent, image generation, and the Codex agentic-coding tools — plus knowledge connectors to Google Drive, SharePoint, and GitHub. For teams, the draw is a shared admin console with SAML SSO, SCIM, and MFA, SOC 2 Type 2 and ISO 27001 compliance, and a contractual guarantee that workspace data is not used to train models. It earns its "best overall" position because it is the most flexible single subscription: one tool that helps across marketing, sales, operations, research, analysis, and writing rather than a narrow specialist for one workflow. The main caveats are the two-seat minimum (solo users should look at Plus or Pro), per-seat limits on advanced features that push heavy users toward paid workspace credits, separately billed API access, and the fact that it is a standalone workspace rather than AI embedded inside Office or Google apps — where Microsoft 365 Copilot or Google Workspace with Gemini fit better. For data residency, BAAs, or zero-data-retention, the contracted Enterprise plan is required.
